Gates Across the Border #writephoto

For Sue’s Photo Prompt today, I’m writing on the recent events that happened along the India-Pakistan Border.

The whole nation waited with bated breaths

For the Gates across the border to open

As the last light of the day disappeared

A proud Mother welcomed home her brave son…

For people who don’t know, here’s the how the events / background story for my write-up unfolded:

India and Pakistan were engaged in an ongoing military confrontation in the Kashmir region and its neighboring provinces (Jammu & Kashmir are an integral part of India); the tensions increased after a suicide car bombing that happened on 14 February 2019.

In the bombing, a militant from Jammu and Kashmir killed 40 Indian Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) members in Pulwama. The Pakistan-based militant group Jaish-e-Mohammed claimed responsibility.

Reacting to the suicide attack, the Indian Air Force (IAF) on 26 February violated the Line of Control (LOC) in Kashmir—for the first time since the Indo-Pak War of 1971—to conduct preemptive non-military aerial strikes that targeted a terrorist training camp.

In an exchange of fire across the LOC on 26 and 27 February,  10 Indian soldiers were injured while 4 Pakistani civilians were killed. On the next day, Pakistan conducted airstrikes in Kashmir and claimed that it had captured a pilot after shooting down Indian jets over Pakistani airspace.

Abhinandan Varthaman, a Wing-Commander in the Indian Air Force, was held for three days under captivity in Pakistan after his aircraft was shot down in an aerial dogfight. He was subsequently released on 1st March at night.

He is widely lauded for shooting down an F-16 fighter jet – a much-advanced aircraft of the Pakistani Air Force – with a short-range R-73 Missile from his MiG 21 Bison before parachuting in the Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) where he was captured by Pakistani authorities.
